Multi Modal Transit Centers

Introduction

Five Multi Modal Transit Centers (MMTCs) or Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) as they are more commonly known, are located on the periphery of Delhi would form major hubs in the public transport system for the metropolis of National Capital Region and the neighbouring states. MMTCs have been conceived to provide seam less connectivity to the public across various modes and geographic regions between the inter-state buses, railway, local buses, Metro, Mono Rail and Light Rail systems.

The process started with identification of major entry points to Delhi from rail and road networks. Suitable locations for MMTCs, based on directional connectivity to neighbouring states, were also identified.

Detailed concept plans with transport, traffic, commercial aspects were prepared for four MMTCs. Following the technical and market studies, development of hotels and specific commercial development were integrated with the MMTCs to make them more responsive to the end user needs as well as make them financially free standing. This Business Plan for the four MMTCs at Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and Dwarka has been completed.

Based on the Business Plan, funds are being sought from various sources for the projects.

Further, DIMTS has been appointed as the Project Management Consultant and Detailed Design Consultant for the MMTCs.

MMTC at Kashmere Gate

Background

The Maharana Pratap Inter-State Bus Terminal at Kashmere Gate is the oldest and the largest ISBT in India catering to buses from Delhi and six other states i.e. Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Kashmere Gate is located in North Delhi in the Old Delhi area in close vicinity to the Red Fort and the Old Delhi Railway Station.

Also located close to this ISBT is the Metro Station which is the junction for the Red and Yellow line.

Current Status

Architects for the re-development of the ISBT at Kashmere Gate have been appointed and they have already carried out the site evaluation. The survey and the development of the concept plan are in progress.

MMTC at Sarai Kale Khan

Background

The MMTC at Sarai Kale Khan is another major bus terminus of Delhi city and caters mostly to buses going to Rajasthan, UP, Haryana and few DTC buses. It is also critically located near the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The ISBT was established in 1996 and has been since running through temporary sheds.

Current Status

The architect for the re-development of the MMTC has already been appointed. The concept drawings have been finalized and submitted to MCD for approval. The tender documents are under preparation while the pre-qualification for contractors for the construction has been finalized. The date of completion of the project is January 2011.

MMTC at Anand Vihar

Background

The MMTC at Anand Vihar extends to an area of 10.2 hectares and faces the NH 56. The Anand Vihar Railway Station is situated to the west of this site. This ISBT was established in 1993 and has been running through temporary sheds.

Design

The new ISBT is a state of the art, modern and integrated 'green building'. While being modern in its structure and appearance, the design also keeps in mind the main functionality of the building and that is to cater to large crowds thus requiring easy maintenance. The design also had the challenge of integrating an elevated metro track, a via duct which bisects the site into two parts and also the railway station, while retaining the independent characteristics of all these components.

There are separate entrances and exits for buses, auto and taxis to avoid clash between different modes of transport. A well planned network of foot over bridges allows easy movement of pedestrians between the terminal, metro station and the railway station.

An important feature of this building is its environment friendly design. It efficiently uses energy, water and other resources to protect the health of the public, reduce wastage, increase productivity and of course protect the environment.

The ISBT will also have provision for a shopping arcade, restaurants as well as food courts.
