Passenger Information System (PIS)

DIMTS has implemented a Passenger Information System (PIS) on four BRT routes namely 419, 423, 425 and 522, which travel through the BRT Corridor from Ambedkar Nagar Terminal to MoolChand on both non-AC & AC buses. The System uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to determine real-time information (location and time) of the bus by taking into account the current position of the bus, speed and scheduled stops the expected time of arrival of a bus at any stop on the selected route can be predicted

All the non AC and AC buses running on these four routes have been fitted with GPS devices. The GPS device determines the position of bus in terms of latitude and longitude at a point of time, which is then communicated to a Central Server in real time through a GPRS connection. Based on pre-configured route and the current position of the bus, the time likely to be taken by the bus for reaching subsequent bus stops is calculated. This Expected Time of Arrival (ETA) of buses in minutes is sent to LED Boards, again through GPRS connection. The solution helps in reducing the waiting anxiety of the passengers waiting at the bus.

On clicking the bus stop icon on virtual PIS Board, the route-wise information with Expected Time of Arrival (ETA) of buses in minutes will be displayed with respect to buses which will be arriving at the bus stop within next 30 minutes. This feature will help the passengers who want to travel in AC buses or intend to switchover from personalized cars to public transport on BRT routes, to plan their journey. It is expected that the aforesaid measures would help to build the commuters confidence in public transport in Delhi and solve problem of congestion and pollution in the long run.
