Road Transport

  • Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System in Delhi
The need for mobility increases with the economic growth of the city. Delhi is emerging as a hub for all kind of commercial activities. According to Urban Age (2008) study, it is projected that Delhi and its satellite towns would be among the most populous cities in the world by 2020. The transportation network in Delhi is predominantly road based with 48 modes of transport, of which 32 are motorised and 16 are non-motorized (RITES 2008). Numbers of private vehicles on Delhi's road are increasing at a phenomenal rate. In According to RITES Report (2008), around 46% of total personal trips in Delhi are completed by using public transport system (Bus and Metro) in 2007-08.

A good public transportation system offers better mobility, besides other social advantages like reducing congestion and air pollution. In order to attract a large number of commuters to buses, there is a need to offer good and comfortable service. BRT System plays an important role in a good public transport system.

In total, Delhi Government plans to build 26 BRT corridors in the Delhi, covering a total length of 310 km by the year 2020. Delhi Government has planned to build seven BRT corridors in phase I by year 2010. The Techno Feasibility Study of the remaining six BRT Corridors of Phase I have been completed. The EFC (Expenditure Finance Committee) of GNCTD has cleared the proposal for undertaking these six BRT Corridors at a total cost of Rs. 1819.10 Crores. Execution of the Project will begin on clearance of the proposal by the Cabinet of GNCTD

The construction work on the first BRT corridor from Dr. Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate (length 14.5 km.) is expected to be completed by first half of 2009. The work has already been completed from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand and this stretch of BRT corridor is operatonal. The total length of the first stretch is 5.8 kms.

    • Two New BRT Corridors

On behalf of Transport Department, GNCTD, DIMTS issued the RFP (Request for Proposal) document for the preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) of two more corridor - Moolchand to Jahangir Puri (28 Kms) and Shastri Park to Karwal Nagar (8.0 Kms) in August 2008.

DIMTS has appointed the consultant to prepare the DPR. It is expected that the consultant will submit the report in next 6-8 months.

  • Corporatisation of Private Stage Carriage Bus Operation in Delhi

Buses have an integral and pre-eminent position in Delhi's transportation system. This is evident in the current major travel survey conducted in Delhi, viz. the RITES Primary Survey in 2008. According to this, 41.5% of total personal trips in Delhi are completed by using Bus in 2007-08. Buses have this large share of public transportation despite their visibly low levels of passenger comfort by virtue of their low usage cost and extensive network.

For this, it is essential to develop a dependable, cost-effective, affordable, integrated and user- friendly bus transport system that enables users to experience as much of the convenience of private transport, in terms of flexibility of use and destination specificity, as possible. To improve the Bus system in the city Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) has launched a scheme to corporatize the Private Stage Carriage operation of buses in Delhi. GNCTD has appointed DIMTS as Integrated Mechanism for the Private stage carriage buses corporatization scheme. The main role of the company is to handle the bid management process, monitoring and management of the operation of private stage carriage buses, preparation of unified time table (UTT), monitoring of service level standards and other key aspects.

As per the new scheme, DIMTS has aggregated all the existing 657 bus routes in 17 clusters. DIMTS will select a private entity for each cluster, through a competitive bidding process. Selected players will provide private carriage services under a suitable contractual structure. These contractual structures will be designed to ensure universality, uniformity and compliance to prescribed performance standards.

    • Cluster 1

Route baskets of 32 routes mainly covering the Southern part of Delhi are covered under the Cluster 1. On behalf of Transport Department, GNCTD, DIMTS has completed codal formalities for short-listing the Concessionaire for award of contract for operation of stage carriage buses. The operation of private stage carriage buses under corporatization scheme in Cluster-1 is likely to commence in second half of 2009.
